The land was originally owned by Arthur E. Ela, and was purchased on May 23, 1955 by Joseph Lawrence, who built a one-room camp there. The camp, land, and right of way were purchased from Joseph Lawrence by Abbott and Alma Withers on September 16, 1970. An additional 25 feet of lake shore frontage were purchased on September 7, 1977, bringing the camp lot to its present size.
In 1954, the log cabin was built on the family woodlot in Solon, Maine. It was moved for safekeeping to the Embden camp lot in early summer, 1979. Many family members were present for the move and rebuilding of the log cabin. In fact, if you look at one of the concete slabs beneath the log cabin, you can see the footprints of each of the six young Withers cousins: (from right to left, in order of age from oldest to youngest): Mike, Scott, Kelly, Lesley, and Greg. The littlest one, one off to one side, is Brad's.
In 1971?, the living room was added to the original structure. Years later, a larger bedroom was added, as well. The front steps were replaced in the 1990s. Around 1999-2000, the whole camp was jacked up, crushed rock was spread underneath, and the camp was leveled. The camp had settled to the point where it rested on the ground, so this leveling was a big help. During the summer of 2000, the storage shed was relocated and repaired. In August of 2001, many family members were present for a family lobster cookout. A new sleep sofa replaced the old brown one. Later that fall, in October, the aging septic system was replaced. As a result, the driveway area was rebuilt and the "red rocket" woodshed was relocated from the center of the circular drive to just behind the camp. Unfortunately, the new tank collapsed just weeks later and had to be replaced again. The end of 2001 brought a new stove to replace the old fireplace, and a new door to replace the old storm door. Hopefully, that will keep the snow from blowing in! The water was uncommonly low in 2001-2002 due to drought and problems with the dam. A mild winter meant little ice for ice fishing.
As always, the camp is a peaceful place where family members and friends go to relax and unwind. We hope many more generations of Withers (and their friends and family) will enjoy this beautiful spot.
